The fisheries department in Panaji is set to introduce a pioneering project to modernize fish sales in the state by utilizing electric fishing vehicles (EVs). These new three-wheeler EVs will feature solar power and electric charging capabilities to ensure sustainable and eco-friendly operations. They will also include refrigerated compartments to maintain the freshness of fish, as well as a mobile platform for selling seafood.
According to a department official, this innovative initiative marks the first dedicated EV for selling fish in Goa. The vehicles will offer both raw and fried fish to cater to diverse consumer preferences throughout the day.
Interested entrepreneurs, fish vendors, and fish farmers will be invited to apply for the opportunity to operate these vehicles. Initially, ten state-of-the-art EVs will be introduced, with plans to add an additional 40 vehicles later this year. This initiative aims to support local fish vendors and improve the seafood supply chain in Goa.
The official stated that the launch of the ten EVs will take place on Monday as part of the Narali Poornima celebrations. This traditional festival is observed by fishing communities along the western coast of India, including Goa, as a way to honor the sea and seek protection. It also signifies the beginning of the fishing season in the state.
